The roads and the clouds are both clearing up, and that means one thing for motorcycle enthusiasts: It’s officially riding season. Before you dust off your bike and fire up the engine, let’s run through a few tips and reminders that’ll help you keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down.

Make Time for a Tune Up
We all know how long South Dakota winters can get — and that means your bike’s been sitting for a minute. Give it some love before you roll out. If you’ve got the time, run through a TCLOCS inspection. It’s the go-to method for making sure your ride is road-ready.
Tires & Wheels — Check for proper pressure, tread wear and any cracks.
Controls — Make sure levers, pedals and cables respond smoothly.
Lights — Test and replace any burnt-out bulbs.
Oil & Fluids — Top off or change your oil, coolant and brake fluid if necessary.
Chassis — Check the frame, suspension and chain or belt for wear.
Stands — Your kickstand or center stand should be nice and stable.

Stay On Course
No matter how many miles you’ve logged, there’s always something new to learn. Plenty of places around the state offer training courses that can sharpen your skills — and could even get you a discount on insurance.

All Your Gear, All the Time
Sure, the wind in your hair sounds romantic. Your head on the pavement? Not so much. Helmets, gloves and leathers are there to protect you. Gear up with a DOT-approved helmet, protective clothing, gloves and boots, and proper eyewear to protect yourself from anything the road throws your way.

All Eyes on You
It’s always best to put your safety in your own hands. After all, other drivers probably aren’t looking out for motorcycles and might not know as much about them as you do. Make yourself as visible and predictable as possible: Signal every turn, stay out of blind spots and don’t assume drivers can see you.

Sunny Skies = Safer Rides
South Dakota weather can be tough to predict, and road conditions, wind and reduced visibility can turn a smooth ride into a risky one. Before you head out, check the forecast and make sure the road is clear ahead.

Know the Limits (And Yours)
Trust us, we get it. Riding is all about the adrenaline rush. But sticking to the speed limit and being realistic about your skill level is one of the best ways to avoid a bad crash. Make sure you’re up for the challenge, especially on curvy roads or routes you haven’t ridden before.

Keep Your Head
Riding takes serious focus. Leave extra time for breaks on longer trips, and if you’ve been drinking, find another way home. No ride is worth the risk.
Hear that? South Dakota’s open roads are calling — but a little preparation can make the ride safe and invigorating. Gear up, ride smart and stay safe. We’ll see you out there!
